Annual Appraisals: How to get the best from them.
For many people, the mere mention of the term "staff appraisal" fills them with dread. Feelings of worry start to surface at the thought of what could possibly be mentioned and it's funny really because we tend to think about what negatives are going to be brought up about us instead of the positive things we have achieved over the year- the main reason for an appraisal!
To get the best from your appraisal, have a look at the following points:
- Before your appraisal, have a think about your strengths and weaknesses.
Appraisals are there to identify your strengths and praise you for your achievements but to also identify areas of weakness and come up with solutions to how these areas can be improved. If you are already aware of your weaknesses and discuss with your employer your thoughts and ideas about how you can overcome these weaknesses then this will surely impress. Nothing is more unimpressive than a defensive employee refusing to identify a weak spot- everybody has them, including your employer! Embrace the good and the bad and show initiative by improving yourself.
- Do you think that you could benefit from any additional training? Are there any courses available that you feel would strengthen your skills and make you more of an asset to your practice?
During your appraisal, this is bound to be mentioned. Some people will be content in their role and may not wish to expand themselves at that present moment. However if you feel that you want to develop yourself further then you should mention this to your employer. Most employers will be very impressed by your enthusiasm and will support you in further training.
- Be honest and discuss any issues that may be affecting you personally or hindering your performance.
Everybody faces problems at work from time to time and a lot of us tend to grin and bear it. An appraisal is the perfect time to get any issues off your chest. Not only are you in a quiet and confidential environment but the focus is on you. It is your chance to speak with your employer and discuss ways in which you can happier and more productive at work. If you are having problems at work, then it is likely that a good chat will solve those problems. Storing up stress and worry is not good for your health or your work performance so take this opportunity to clear the air or get some help.
Lastly, try and see an appraisal as a positive thing and less of a worry, after all, the name gives it away! Give yourself some praise!
