I always remembered that the lower tray looks like a horseshoe with a handle, the upper has more surface area than the lower so it'd cover the palate remember you wouldn't cover your patients tongue taking a an imp, hope. That helps!
A lower tray (U shaped) has a space where the tongue would fit.
An upper tray has plastic across the space so that you get the impression to cover the palate.

just look the same to me
